You’ve made a personal and professional commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Now comes the real fun – using your influence to inspire your upper management, vendors, colleagues, and customers to change their behavior and increase their sustainability impact. Great. But how do we do it?

This session will explore how fundamental leadership competencies can be applied in the sustainability arena to inspire transformation. Topics include influence without direct authority and leadership vs. management competencies. We will also take an honest look at well-intentioned methods to create change that often don’t work, so that we can focus our energies on what’s most effective. The facilitator will share some of the emerging data and thinking around effective behavior change methods. We will use real-world case studies to illuminate key learnings. You will be able to apply what you’ve learned immediately when you return to the pragmatic reality of your job.

This session is appropriate for people who are in positions to lead and influence teams – with or without direct authority. Participants should have a minimum of two years of experience as a leader/manager and embrace the challenge of inspiring and creating change. Together, we’ll learn, discuss and practice key leadership competencies and how they apply to specific practices we’re trying to change related to sustainability.

As a result of this session, you will:

• Leverage leadership competencies you can use to inspire your teams to create a greater sustainability impact.
• Identify your personal strengths and your areas for development as a leader, especially relating to sustainability.
• Articulate which messages and approaches are best suited to change others’ decisions and behavior around sustainability.
• Create a personal action plan.
