In December 2009, 15,000 delegates will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to negotiate a new global climate deal at the United Nations Climate Change Conference. The event sets new levels of sustainability performance, process and commitment. But did it achieve its objectives? What long term legacy did it leave in the destination and what can other DMOs and organizers learn from this experience?

This session will provide delegates with an overview of the Copenhagen Sustainable Meetings Protocol, a framework of sustainability principles, standards and initiatives used by the COP 15 taskforce in order to spark innovation and change towards an aggressive low carbon destination strategy.

1. Identify how an umbrella framework can guide you in the selection and integration of the correct local and international sustainability standards (BS8901, APEX, GRI), certifications and initiatives. See how BS8901 offers a management system organizing an event more profitably, efficiently and responsibly.
2. Develop new techniques for building multi-stakeholder public-private teams that accelerate the implementation of a destination sustainability strategy and deliver measurable results.
3. Evaluate how strategic supply chain management and sponsorship strategies can dramatically increase the sustainability of your event.
